Michigan Nurses Hall of Fame

The Michigan Nurses Hall of Fame has been established to recognize nurses, both living and deceased, who have made a lasting contribution to patient care and the nursing profession in Michigan. Individuals as well as organizations and entities that have contributed and supported nursing in Michigan may also be recognized with an award. Nominations are being accepted until July 15. These awards will be presented in October.

BERTHA LEE CULP HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD Presented in recognition of significant contributions to diversity within the nursing profession and MNA. A candidate must have demonstrated significant contributions toward the:

  • Advancement of opportunities in nursing to members of minority groups.
  • Integration, retention, and advancement of minorities in the professional association.
  • Advancement of the human rights of nurses and/or health care recipients.

CHERYL L. JOHNSON NURSE LABOR LEADER OF THE YEAR AWARD: Presented to a maximum of four nurses who are members of MNA’s Local Bargaining Units (LBUs). Nominations are made by fellow bargaining unit members. A candidate must:

  • Demonstrate commitment to professional nursing via individual practice competency and continuing educational growth.
  • Use contract language to define, monitor, and enhance nursing practice in the work environment.
  • Function as an active leader within the local staff council through past or present elected office and committee participation.

EXCELLENCE IN NURSING PRACTICE AWARD Presented to nurses whose professional practice and achievements exemplify excellence in nursing. A candidate must:

  • Have demonstrated excellence in practice and commitment to the profession of nursing.
  • Demonstrate leadership abilities in practice.
  • Promote effective inter/extradisciplinary collaboration.
  • Demonstrate the advocacy role in practice.
  • Demonstrate evidence-based practice.
  • Be viewed by recipients of care (clients), co-workers, peers, and/or members of other disciplines as outstanding in his/her field.

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO MNA AWARD Recognizes one member or associate member who has made outstanding contributions to the goals and programs of MNA. The candidate must:

  • Not have served as president within the past five years.
  • Have actively participated in MNA for several years at the staff council levels.
  • Have made significant contributions to the strengthening and/or growth of MNA.
  • Demonstrate leadership in the successful resolution of complex or difficult issues faced by MNA.

EXCELLENCE IN NURSING PRACTICE AWARD Presented to nurses whose professional practice and achievements exemplify excellence in nursing. A candidate must:

  • Have demonstrated excellence in practice and commitment to the profession of nursing.

POLITICAL NURSE ACTIVIST AWARD Presented to a member or associate member who has made significant contributions to nursing practice and health policy through political and legislative activity. A candidate must have:

  • Promoted the nursing profession in political and health care arenas through demonstrated involvement in the legislative/political activities of MNA.
  • Through education, advanced the knowledge of nurses, politicians, and policy makers concerning nursing’s contributions to the health care arena.
  • Demonstrated leadership at the staff council, state, or national levels and promoted the effectiveness of nursing’s role in the provision of health care services.
  • Served as a mentor and role model to other nurses in the political process.
  • Sought opportunities to advance nursing’s legislative agenda through grassroots activity.

STAFF COUNCIL LEADERSHIP AWARDS Presented to MNA Staff Council leaders in recognition of their unique contributions in their local bargaining unit. A candidate must:

  • Function as an active leader within the local staff council through past or present elected office and committee participation.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional nursing via individual practice competency and continuing educational growth.
  • Use contract language to define, monitor, and enhance nursing practice in the work environment.

N3 IMPLEMENTATION AWARD FOR CLINICAL SETTINGS Provides a means of recognizing and promoting appropriate use of NANDA, NOC and NIC (N3) in settings that span the continuum of care.

INSTRUCTIONS

Use the award nomination form. The nominator must be a member of MNA, and the agreement should be signed by the chief nursing officer or other representative of the clinical setting. The narrative should address the above criteria. Letters of support should come from representatives of the clinical setting. CVs of nurses at the clinical setting are optional and if submitted, should address the award criteria.

N3 IMPLEMENTATION AWARD FOR SCHOOLS OF NURSING Recognizes a Michigan School of Nursing that has demonstrated creativity and innovation in implementing use of NANDA, NOC & NIC in the academic setting.

INSTRUCTIONS

Use the award nomination form. The nominator must be a member of MNA, and the agreement should be signed by the dean or other representative of the school. The narrative should address the above criteria. Letters of support should come from representatives of the school or the clinical setting. Brief resumes of faculty at the school are optional and if submitted, should address the award criteria.
