PURPOSE
The purpose of the Michigan Nurses Hall of Fame is to
recognize the distinguished, lifelong commitment and leadership
of Michigan nurses and their supporters for the benefit
of the nursing profession and the delivery of health care
in Michigan.
Induction into the Hall of Fame informs members of the
profession, as well as the members of the health care
community and the public about the excellent achievements,
accomplishments and contributions of Michigan registered
nurses to health care in the state.

CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION AND SELECTION FOR THE
HALL OF FAME
Nurse candidates must be registered nurses who possess
or have possessed a Michigan license in their lifetime.
Nurses nominated in the Historic Category (below) will
include nurses who contributed to the profession and the
health and welfare of Michigan citizens prior to the 1909
inception of Michigan nursing licensure.
The candidate demonstrates professional practice and behavior
that are characteristic and consistent with the ANA Nurses
Code of Ethics and the Nursing Social Policy Statement.
Humane characteristics of the candidate may include: a
magnanimous spirit, courageous, noble in mind and heart,
generosity, healing in professional relationships, self-giving
and welcoming of diversity and inclusiveness.
The contributions must be of such significance as to last
beyond their career and even their lifetime.
Contributions and commitment to the profession are continuous.
The individual has recorded achievements in one or more
major domains of the profession: practice, education,
and research. Practice includes direct patient care, administration,
political action and policy formation. Candidate's contributions
have greatly benefited the profession and the health and
welfare of Michigan citizens.

Historical
1) Deceased nurses who meet the above criteria.
2) Nurses or those who were in other ways identified with
nursing and were technically not a “trained”
nurse (for example, those who were born before 1861) and
who made a significant contribution to nursing in some

Contemporary
Nurses who meet the above criteria and who are living
at the time of nomination.
Annual
Number of Inductees
Up
to five individuals may be inducted in each annual cycle.
Procedures
for Nomination
The call for nominations is made in June. Announcements
and applications are widely made available via MNA and
other nursing/health organization web sites and publications.
Nomination awards must be submitted by July 15.
Awards will be presented in October at the annual meeting.
Award
Medallion
A
medallion is designed and presented to each awardee. A
medallion is also placed on a wall plaque to be housed
and displayed at MNA headquarters.
