Michigan Nurses Association Advocacy Academy

Join the 2018 MNA Advocacy Academy class

For MNA members only: Whether you’re new to legislative advocacy or are ready to take your skills to the next level, the MNA Advocacy Academy is for you.

Registered nurses deserve a strong voice in the laws that affect our profession, patients, practice and communities. But to have an impact, nurses need to understand how laws are made and how to influence the process. We’ll give you the information, support and practice you need to succeed.

Space in the academy is limited and the deadline to enroll is March 1. Sign up online: www.minurses.org/AAregistration.

MNA Advocacy Academy Launch:

  • Saturday, March 10, 2018 from 8:30am to 12:00 (Noon)
  • Washtenaw Community College, Morris Lawrence Building, 4800 East Huron Drive, Ann Arbor.
  • Breakfast and refreshments will be provided.
  • Limited spots are available, so sign up soon. Sign up online: minurses.org/AAregistration.

MNA Advocacy Academy

Who: Any MNA member who wants to build their knowledge and skills in legislative advocacy, working on MNA’s priority issues. These include advancing the Safe Patient Care Act — a bipartisan bill package that would set safe RN-to-patient ratios in hospitals, limit forced overtime and require hospital transparency – and protecting collective bargaining.

What: A free 6-month professional development program that gives nurses the tools to be effective legislative advocates.

Where: We’ll meet in person three times: at the Academy launch (March 10 in Ann Arbor), at the Academy special session (May 14 in Lansing) and for graduation at the MNA House of Delegates (Oct. 5 in Troy). We’ll complete our work remotely in between, through conference calls, webinars, and online assignments.

When: March 10 through October 5; total time commitment of about 3 hours a month.

“Through the MNA Advocacy Academy, I felt confident and equipped to meet with my state legislators to ask them to support laws that increase patient safety in hospitals. I learned to share my personal story about why such legislation is important to me and my patients.” – Jennifer Thomas, RN
