MNA Legislative Update #6
06.03.2011
Annual Mackinac Conference Is This Week’s Legislative Priority
On the heels of Memorial Day weekend, Michigan’s legislature put in two short days of session at the Capitol before heading up to Mackinac Island to be wined and dined by the members of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce. Many Michigan businesses are thrilled with the $1.8 billion tax cut that they just received. Too bad the majority of Michigan citizens don’t own a big business or corporation to be able to reap the benefits of such a large cut. Instead, we are paying for their tax cut with a $1.7 billion tax increase on working people, the elderly and the poor, as gas and food prices continue to skyrocket.
National Nurses United Annual Staff Nurse Assembly Begins on Sunday
Sunday, June 5, marks the kick-off of NNU’s annual event in Washington, DC. MNA is sending 67 of our members to participate in four days of conferencing, lobbying, and congressional meetings. Members will get the opportunity to hear from Michigan’s two U.S. Senators: Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin, in addition to meeting with staff members from their congressional offices. It promises to be an educational and enjoyable experience for all.
Staying informed is critical, as well as getting involved at the local level. Get yourself out there, call or write your legislators, let us help you set up in district meetings with them, and take some time to go to their monthly coffee hours. It is imperative that we all get involved and stay involved with this process.
