State of the State: Overview
As is tradition, Governor Snyder addressed a joint session of the House and Senate on Wednesday, January 18th, at 7:00 pm. The purpose of the annual address is to outline the goals and agenda of the executive branch, but many individuals found the Governor’s speech lacking in specifics and purpose. The hour-long oration was mainly a recap of the Governor’s pro-business agenda in 2011.
State of the State: A Michigan Health Insurance Exchange
While the overall message and tone of the Governor’s address was extremely disappointing, it was a relief to discover that he is promoting and pushing for the implementation of a health insurance exchange in Michigan. We support him in this endeavor and we sincerely hope that our legislature will pass this sooner rather than later. SB 693 is the bill currently being debated in the House Health Policy Committee regarding the establishment of a Michigan Health Insurance Exchange.
State of the State: Autism Coverage a Priority for Snyder
In addition to establishing a Michigan Health Insurance Exchange, Governor Snyder is making it a priority for insurance companies to cover the needs of individuals suffering from autism. We applaud this effort and agree whole-heartedly that insurance must cover the needs of autistic people. Autism is a serious condition and those who have it deserve to have their needs covered by insurance.
State of the State: Michigan Needs to Get Healthier
Michigan’s health and well-being took center stage over the course of the Governor’s remarks. He stated that we must focus on improving the health status of Michigan’s citizens, specifically by tackling the growing obesity issue. We are glad to hear that the Snyder administration is taking Michigan’s growing health problems seriously and that it is looking to address them now instead of in the future.
