Change means opportunity

by Diane Goddeeris, RN, President

Just when we least expect it, things change in our lives, and we are faced with new challenges. As you know, that happened at MNA, and I find myself as your president. There was a moment when I thought, “This isn’t what I planned on…” However, the familiar nurse’s response – the same response that occurs when we stay late to help out at the end of our shift – kicked in. I have a new opportunity to do what I can for nurses in Michigan.

The same thing is happening to each of you. Changes are happening to nurses and nursing that affect our ability to provide safe patient care. If we sit back and don’t get involved, we miss the opportunity to make a difference in our profession, and we let others define nursing care for the future.

Come to the Michigan Nurses MARCH! It may be outside of your comfort zone to get involved politically. However, we need you to step up and tell your stories to legislators and voters or stand in support of the nurses who do. We have to let the public know how to provide safe patient care in any setting.
Just as I am taking on this challenge, I ask you to take the challenge too. Take one day and make a difference for nursing. Let’s be proud of what we can do for nursing’s future together.
