DMC NURSES, MNA DELEGATES RALLY FOR COLLECTIVE BARGAINING It was an amazing sight watching Detroit Medical Center registered nurses and MNA delegates from across the state combine to march in front of Harper-Hutzel Hospitals in support of the organizing DMC nurses. You can read what the Detroit News had to say about the event here. The rally took place on Thursday, October 4. Watch for more coverage of the rally in the November/December Michigan Nurse! 2007-2008 MNA BOARD OF DIRECTORS SLATED The 2007-2008 MNA Board of Directors Executive Committee members are as follows: Cheryl Johnson, President (UMPNC); Diane Goddeeris, Vice President (PECSH); Carolyn Hietamaki, Secretary (Marquette); and Becky Baldwin, Treasurer (Borgess). Directors at Large are: Jennifer Casey (Schoolcraft); Jeff Breslin (PECSH); Gail Jehl (PECSH); John Armelagos (UMPNC); Ken Lanphear (Borgess); Kathryn Oppenheim (UMPNC); Lisa Mitchem (Dickinson); Bette O'Connor-Rogers (VNA of Western MI); Carol Kirtland (PECSH); and Rebecca Splitt (Alpena). A complete recap of all MNA Nursing Expo and 2007 House of Delegates action will be printed in the November/December 2007 issue of Michigan Nurse. MNA AWARDS PRESENTED In a touching ceremony on Wednesday, October 3, two MNA Nurse Hero Awards were presented. One was presented to Tess Karwoski, RN and the other posthumously to the family of Lisa Hanson, RN. Tess was recognized for her whistleblowing efforts in regard to environmental health and safe patient care. Lisa was killed in March 2007 in the line of duty in an ambulance accident. The Awards Luncheon also celebrated the life of Mary Sexton, who was inducted posthumously to the Michigan Nurses Hall of Fame. More details of the Awards Luncheon will be in the November/December issue of Michigan Nurse. THE LATEST ON SCHIP As expected, President Bush vetoed the House-Senate conference (compromise) bill - the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007 (CHIPRA) - on October 3, 2007. The President is now hinting that he might be open to a compromise; meanwhile the House is working towards getting the 14 votes needed to overturn the veto. You can read an analysis of CHIPRA here. The deadline for applying for a UAN Labor Education Scholarship is November 15, 2007, and awards will be announced by December 14, 2007.
