RESOLUTION PASSED A resolution has been passed in the Michigan House of Representatives to make November 2007 Diabetes Awareness Month in Michigan. MNA is listed as the nursing association to take up this resolution. Of particular interest: "that healthcare providers are encouraged, as they detect and treat the emerging diabetes epidemic, to engage in an aggressive program with their patients, including dietary counseling and exercise, measurements of body weight, and other associated risk facts." To read the entire resolution, click here and type in 226 for the resolution number. REGISTER THIS WEEK! The Fall 2007 UAN Labor Education Scholarship Application period is underway. The deadline for applying for a UAN Labor Education Scholarship is November 15, 2007, and awards will be announced by December 14, 2007. Complete application materials and scholarship guidelines are available on the UAN website or click on the labor education button on the right side of the home page. SCHIP UPDATE The House and the Senate have now both passed the SCHIP compromise bill, and once again, the bill will be presented to the President. The SCHIP program is continuing to operate in the states using FY 08 funding under a temporary continuation of the program; however, that continuation ends on November 16. In the meantime, more pressure is being put on House Republicans to change their votes in order to override a promised Presidential veto. Be sure to check out the MNA Events Calendar for all upcoming events and activities! |
