VOTE TUESDAY IN THE PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY!

Here are some key points regarding voting on Tuesday for the Presidential primary:

  • Voters will vote at their regular polling places between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Jan. 15.
  • In order to vote at a polling place, a voter must show a photo ID or sign a statement that they do not have a photo ID with them.
  • Voters will be asked whether they want a Democratic or Republican ballot, and a record will be made of which ballot they take.
  • The voter's choice of candidate will be secret as in all public elections.
  • The names of all nine candidates will appear on the Republican primary ballot.
  • The Democratic ballot will have 6 choices: Hillary Clinton, Christopher Dodd, Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, Uncommitted and Write-in.
  • A vote for "uncommitted" is a vote to send delegates to the Democratic National Convention who are not committed or pledged to any candidate. Those delegates can vote for any candidate they choose at the convention. A write-in vote will not count so those wishing to support a non-listed candidate should instead vote "uncommitted."

JANUARY IS NATIONAL CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

In 2005, 123 women in Michigan died from cervical cancer - up from 104 women in 2003. To raise awareness about the seriousness of cervical cancer, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) is recognizing January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. A fact sheet is available on the MDCH website here. Another good place to find more information and ways to get active in helping prevent cervical cancer is through the Coalition of Labor Union Women's (CLUW) Cervical Cancer Awareness Project. Take some time this month to make sure you're aware of the latest research regarding cervical cancer and determine ways you can emphasize the importance of screening with your patients!

APPLY FOR THE MSLRP

Medical, dental and mental health care providers can now apply for a 2008 Michigan State Loan Repayment Program (MSLRP) contract. This is also the first opportunity for mental health care workers and their employers and communities to take advantage of expanded eligible practice site types and sources of funds for local match contracts. The MSLRP provides loan repayment assistance for those willing to provide full-time primary health care services in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) at a not-for-profit health clinic for two or more years. For more information, visit the MSLRP website here.
