MNA MEMBER HIGHLIGHTED IN STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS

If you listened to Governor Jennifer M. Granholm's State of the State address this past Tuesday, you may have heard her mention John Sternhagen, a nurse from Gratiot Medical Center who was a worker for 31 years at Electrolux in Greenville and went back to school for his nursing degree after the factory closed. Granholm commended John, an MNA member, for making the transition and encouraged others to participate in the No Worker Left Behind initiative. NOTE: Granholm will announce a budget proposal next week, which, if passed, will continue to fund this program for at least one fiscal year.

MNA OPPOSES LIMITATION ON ERGONOMIC STANDARDS

This week saw MNA at the Capitol testifying in opposition to a bill that would prohibit the Department of Labor and Economic Growth from legislating ergonomics standards. Ken Fletcher, MNA Director of Government Affairs, who testified to the bill explains the problem: "MNA supports an ergonomics standard. With proper enforcement, we believe an ergonomic standard will not only prevent back injuries and musculoskeletal disorders, but will also improve patient care. Senate Bill 843 would ban an egronomic standard that has actually not even been introduced as of yet. MNA is calling on the Senate to wait until an actual ergonomic standard has been proposed and has gone through the public hearing phrase before it is voted on."

HAVE YOU TAKEN THE SURVEY YET?

Working America, the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, is encouraging people to take their new 2008 Health Care for America survey. Because health care is such a primary topic of the upcoming Presidential race, any data that can be shared with the candidates regarding people's experiences with the current health care system becomes extremely important. You can help! To take the 2008 Health Care for America survey, click here.
