HAPPY LEAP DAY!

Today is a special edition of NurseLine, as it falls on Leap Day. Tradition holds that on February 29, women may ask men to marry them. If a man rejects the proposal, he is to give the woman a kiss, a pound (worth approximately $1.99 in American currency) and a pair of silk gloves (or a silk gown in some traditions). Now that you have your Leap Day trivia, keep reading for the latest nursing news!

FREE TOY LEAD TESTING

The Michigan Department of Community Health's Healthy Homes division is partnering with two scientific instrument manufacturers to offer free toy testing for lead at the three following events:

  • Saturday, March 1, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, West Michigan Home and Garden Show, at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.  Testing will be held in the Grand Gallery.
  • Saturday, March 8 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Michigan Home and Garden Show at Ford Field, Detroit.
  • Saturday, March 8 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm; Superior Dome in Marquette for the "U.P. Builder's Show".  Testing will be held at the Healthy Homes booth on the main floor of the dome.
Parents will know within a few seconds the results of each toy screening.  Parents may be asked to limit the number of toys depending on the popularity of the event.

TWO DATES TO NOTE!

If you are a registered voter, you can ignore this information. If, however, you are not a registered voter or if you are not sure if you are a registered voter, here are two important dates to note. The deadline for registering to vote in Michigan is July 7, 2008 for the Primary Election and October 6, 2008 for the General Election. Click here for the Michigan Voter Information Center to find out if you are registered and if not, how to get registered! Remember, your vote only counts if you cast it!
