ATTEND THE HEALTH AND SAFETY CONFERENCE - FREE!
The Michigan AFL-CIO Health and Safety Conference will be held on May 15 and 16 at Cobo Hall in Detroit as part of the America at Work 2008 Union Industries Show. Topics include: ergonomics, asbestos awareness, violence in the workplace, MIOSHA information, and effective health and safety communications. The conference ends on Friday morning with the ribbon cutting and opening of the Show. MNA will pay for a limited number of registrations on a first come, first served basis. WASHTENAW RNS RETAIN RETIREE HEALTH BENEFITS
The Unit I and Unit II registered nurses at the Washtenaw County Public Health Department have ratified a three year contract which includes retiree health benefit coverage. As part of the negotiations, current employees will continue to receive full retiree health care benefits at no cost with new employees contributing 5% to a health care fund. MEDICAID IN MI TO TAKE A HIT - CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS TO HELP STOP THE PROCESS!
From the Michigan League for Human Services (MLHS): Michigan stands to lose $3.9 billion over the next five years in federal Medicaid dollars if
regulatory changes by the Bush Administration go into effect. This fiscal year alone, Michigan will lose more than $700 million, according to a report from the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Among the cuts would be services to children and adults with disabilities through new restrictions on physical and occupational therapies. Medicaid spending for school transportation for Medicaid-eligible children would be ended, as would dollars that go to hospitals to train new doctors. MLHS is encouraging the Michigan congressional delegation to support H.R. 5613 or S.
2819, which will extend, for one year, the moratorium on the seven Medicaid regulations. For more on the proposed cuts and legislation, click here.
