DMC CHARGED TO HONOR NLRB SANCTIONS Leaders from around the Detroit community convened in front of Harper-Hutzel Hospital yesterday in support of the Detroit Medical Center nurses. The gathering of clergy and other community leaders was in response to a settlement reached with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) last week which allows the nurses to exercise their legal right to choose a union without harassment or intimidation. For more on this story, read the press release here. LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR THE NURSES DAY AT THE EXPO CE! Space is filling quickly for the 4.0 contact hours, lunch and FREE ticket to the Women's Expo on May 1. If you haven't registered yet, please do so immediately! Don't forget that many of the exhibitors will be offering nurses discounts on May 1 (bring your workplace ID or nursing license). Plan to stop by the MNA booth May 1-4 at the Expo where we will be collecting signatures to put a proposal on the November ballot that would ensure that every Michigander has affordable health coverage. In addition, we are playing a hand washing game with the children who are attending the Expo called "Sink Those Germs!" at the booth - look for "Henry the Hand," our 7' hand washing mascot! ONLY A FEW SPACES LEFT TO ATTEND - FREE! There are just a few openings left to attend the Michigan AFL-CIO Health and Safety Conference for free on May 15 and 16 at Cobo Hall in Detroit as part of the America at Work 2008 Union Industries Show. The conference ends on Friday morning with the ribbon cutting and opening of the Show. MNA will pay for a limited number of registrations on a first come, first served basis. A STICKY SCHIP SITUATION It has been a while since SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) was in the news but an interesting development occured this week. According to The New York Times, "lawyers for the Government Accountability Office ruled that 'the Bush administration violated federal law last year when it restricted states' ability to provide health insurance to children of middle-income families.'"
