If you are having difficulty reading this version of NurseLine or accessing the links, go to www.minurses.org. ACTION ALERT - TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT CHILDREN! The Michigan Network for Children's Environmental Health is asking for your help in e-mailing Michigan representatives in support of HB 4569, which would establish measures in Michigan to require use of lindane only under a doctor's direct supervision. Lindane is a toxic pesticide that has been banned for use in more than 50 countries and the state of California, and is no longer used on pets, in agriculture or in the military anywhere in the US, according to the EPA. But you can still put lindane on children's heads or whole bodies as part of a treatment for head lice or scabies. Even with proper use, this pesticide can be absorbed through the skin and misuse can result in serious side effects. To access a letter of support that can be e-maile directly to your legislator, click here. WHAT A DAY AT THE EXPO! The first Nurses Day at the Women's Expo in Novi was amazing! Nurses packed the continuing education sessions in the morning, over 500 water bottles with the MNA logo were passed out, hundreds of signatures were collected in support of the ballot resolution for health care for all Michiganders, and Henry the Hand (our 7' champion handwashing mascot) posed for pictures and "high fived" the attendees. Although the CE session is over, you can still visit the MNA booth until Sunday, May 4. Come out and join the fun! LAST CALL FOR FREE REGISTRATIONS There are just a few openings left to attend the Michigan AFL-CIO Health and Safety Conference for free on May 15 and 16 at Cobo Hall in Detroit as part of the America at Work 2008 Union Industries Show. Topics include: ergonomics, asbestos awareness, violence in the workplace, MIOSHA information, and effective health and safety communications. The conference ends on Friday morning with the ribbon cutting and opening of the Show. MNA will pay for a limited number of registrations on a first come, first served basis. To sign up and for more information, contact Joyce Losen at 888.MI.NURSE, ext. 232. GRANHOLM FOLLOWS UP ON THE NURSING SHORTAGE Shortly before Governor Jennifer M. Granholm entered Sparrow Hospital for emergency surgery this week, she signed a letter of support for nurses in time for Nurses Week. In the letter she pledged her "continued support and action to address the nursing shortage in Michigan." Apparently, this includes discussing it with the MNA members currently providing her care! The Detroit News has reported that "Granholm was quizzing nurses Wednesday at the hospital about how to address the state's nursing shortage." PLAN TO ATTEND THE MICHIGAN POLICY SUMMIT 2008 Please join the Michigan Environmental Council and other advocates, policy experts, elected officials and community members at the second annual Michigan Policy Summit 2008: Rebuilding Michigan on May 10, 2008 from 8:00 – 4:30 pm at the Lansing Center. Popular political activist and author Jim Hightower and top journalist and radio commentator Amy Goodman will be the featured speakers at the summit. The Michigan Policy Summit is an annual gathering of the state's progressive community aimed at bringing labor, environment, social justice and other progressive groups together to move Michigan forward. This year’s focus is health care, clean energy and education. For a complete agenda and to register, see www.mipolicysummit.org. NURSING STUDENTS, MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The Michigan Nursing Students Association (MNSA) is pleased to announce the dates and locations of their major events for 2008-2009: Upper Peninsula Conference Council of Student Leaders (COSL) Annual State Convention Information on all of these events will be posted to the MNSA website as it becomes available. Bookmark the site and check it frequently! SUPPORT S. 1244 and H.R. 2049! Tell your senators and representative to support the Protecting America's Workers Act (S. 1244 and H.R. 2049). The bill would expand OSHA protections to millions of uncovered workers, enhance whistleblower protections and substantially increase penalties for serious, willful and criminal safety violations. For an e-letter that can be sent to your legislators, click here. Check out the MNA Events Calendar for all upcoming events and activities! |
