GOVERNOR GRANHOLM TO RECEIVE 2005 FRIEND OF NURSING AWARD THURSDAY AT THE ANNUAL NURSES IMPACT ADVOCACY EVENT IN LANSING

(Lansing) Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm is scheduled to address more than 500 nurses and nursing students as she receives the 2005 Friend of Nursing Award on Thursday April 14, 2005 at the Lansing Center in downtown Lansing at the 2005 annual Nurses Impact advocacy day meeting.

The Michigan Nurses Association Political Action Committee (MNA-PAC) voted to award Governor Granholm the Friend of Nursing Award, which is presented to a individual who has shown great support of the nursing profession and MNA s initiatives.

“Governor Granholm’s awareness of and sensitivity to issues important to the MNA and safe patient care made her our clear choice to receive the Friend of Nursing Award,” said Cheryl Johnson, RN, MNA President and critical care nurse at the University of Michigan Hospitals. “We look forward to continuing discussions with Governor Granholm concerning Safe Patient Care legislation, as well as other critical issues regarding the safety and quality of patient care throughout Michigan.”

Sponsored by the Michigan Nurses Association, the voice for Michigan’s 117,000 registered nurses, the University of Michigan School of Nursing, and the Coalition of Michigan Organizations of Nursing (COMON), the 2005 annual Nurses Impact advocacy day will focus discussions on efforts to promote safe patient care in Michigan and confront issues concerning the nationwide nursing crisis.

Scheduled events at Nurses Impact 2005 include a panel discussion with legislative leaders regarding the state of the health care industry, visits to legislative offices and a keynote address, “Inside Michigan Politics: A Political Pundit’s View of the State of the State,” delivered by Bill Ballenger, Publisher of Inside Michigan Politics.

The Michigan Nurses Association, nurses’ voice for 100 years, is the largest nurses’ union in the State of Michigan. The Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) promotes the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, fosters high standards of nursing practice, and lobbies the legislature and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and recipients of nursing services. MNA is a constituent member of the American Nurses Association and the United American Nurses, as well as an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.
