JUDGE TO HEAR COMPLAINT AGAINST HACKLEY HOSPITAL
Okemos, MI – A federal administrative law judge will hear evidence and testimony next week at a hearing held on an Unfair Labor Practice Complaint against Hackley Hospital, located in Muskegon. The Unfair Labor Charge was filed with the National Labor Relations Board on behalf of the registered nurses at Hackley Hospital, who are represented by the Michigan Nurses Association (MNA).
In the latter part of 2007, Hackley Hospital and Mercy General Health Partners announced plans to merge under the ownership of Trinity Health. At that time, MNA requested that it receive materials regarding the proposed merger, such as the letter of intent to merge the two hospitals, the feasibility study, and other reports and information that would show the impact of the merger on the nurses.
“We have repeatedly asked Hackley Hospital for these materials and we are still waiting to receive them,” stated Anita Szczepanski, MNA Labor Attorney. “The law states that the Hospital must provide relevant and necessary information to MNA in a timely manner as requested so that we are able to fulfill our duty to represent the nurses.”
“The Unfair Labor Practice Charge was filed with the National Labor Relations Board because we believe the law is being violated by Hackley Hospital, and the Board agrees,” said John Karebian, MNA Executive Director of Labor and Government Relations. “The NLRB has determined that there is sufficient evidence to issue the Complaint against the Hospital. This hearing is being held simply because the management at Hackley Hospital refuses to provide us with the information we are due by law. It makes me a little wary of what management is trying to hide.”
The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, February 28 in Grand Rapids.
