MILLER RECEIVES 2008 FRIEND OF NURSING AWARD

Lansing, MI – Representative Fred Miller (D-Mt. Clemens) received the 2008 Friend of Nursing Award on Wednesday, March 12, at 9:30 am from the Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) during the Michigan Nurses MARCH! at the Lansing Center in Lansing. The Michigan Nurses MARCH! is an annual political activism day for Michigan nurses and nursing students.

The Michigan Nurses Association Political Action Committee (MNA-PAC) recommended that the MNA Board of Directors award Representative Miller the Friend of Nursing Award, which is presented to an elected or public official who has shown great support of the nursing profession and MNA legislative initiatives.  

Miller, as head of the House Labor Committee, has solicited testimony in support of Safe Patient Care legislation and most recently, the Public Funds Protection Act. In 2007, he held a special Labor Committee hearing in Detroit so that nurses from the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) could provide the legislators with testimony in support of the Public Funds Protection Act. He has been a vocal supporter in addressing nursing concerns.

“Representative Miller is an exceptional candidate for the Friend of Nursing Award because of his support of key issues important to our members,” said Renee Curtis, president of MNA-PAC. “We have been excited and inspired by his enthusiasm and encouragement for nurses and their importance to Michigan’s health system.”
