Guidelines For The Administration Of Medications
In Michigan Assisted Living Facilities

APPENDIX A
Types of Assisted Living Facilities in Michigan

Home for the Aged

Homes for the Aged are licensed for 21 beds or more if freestanding and any size if connected with a nursing home to provide room, board and supervised personal care and protection for residents 60 years old or older on a 24 hour per day, seven day per week basis. Nursing care provided by or through this type of assisted living facility (which is not a nursing home) must be less than continuous nursing care (See Appendix D for definition of continuous nursing care) and that which a home health agency can provide.

Adult Foster Care

Adult Foster Care facilities are licensed for 20 or fewer beds to provide supervision, personal care and protection in addition to room and board for 24 hours a day, five or more days per week and for two of more consecutive weeks for compensation.

Unlicensed Assisted Living Facility

Unlicensed assisted living facilities typically do not provide supervised personal care or two or more meals a day (board) per the contractual agreement; have kitchens in each resident's living unit; and each resident is capable of cooking independently. Sometimes, unlicensed facilities elect to provide room and board, but does not have staff to provide 24-hour supervised care and protection.
