JOB WELL DONE:

When was the last time you gave a colleague or co-worker a pat on the back and recognized that they were doing a good job, or that their contributions were truly appreciated?

Job satisfaction surveys often place being appreciated above many other indicators in rating why nurses stay at their jobs. Here are a few suggestions for giving that "pat on the back:"

  • Say "thank you" to someone who goes beyond what was expected
    - Write a note
    - Send flowers or a gift certificate

  • Develop a "Wall of Fame" to include letters from customers, or start an Employee of the Month program.

  • Implement an annual Nursing Excellence event.

  • Make an effort to offer praise for a job well done to at least six people a day. Start with six pennies in your left pocket. Move a penny to your right pocket after every compliment. You can't go home until all the pennies are in your right pocket!

  • Take a friend to lunch. Sometimes a slight deviation from the routine can help break the cycle of burnout.
