Concerned about the opioid epidemic in Michigan and around the country? This continuing education module provides an update to the opioid epidemic and current pain management best practices and discusses ways that RNs and advanced practice nurses (APRNs) can stay current and implement effective strategies in the care they provide to their patients to alleviate the current prevalence of opioid misuse. Participants who view this module in its entirety and complete the evaluation form and post-test will fulfill required pain management training for state of Michigan RNs and APRNs.
Session objectives:
- Describe current best practices in pain management
- Describe background and epidemiology of opioid overdose
- Define the behaviors and signs/symptoms which may indicate an opioid use disorder
- Identify myths, realities, and changes in the opioid use disorder (OUD) patient
- Identify pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches for pain management
- Identify risk factors and best practices to alleviate opioid misuse including overdose
- Synthesize strategies for developing overdose prevention education messages
Participants that complete the CE presentation and post-test/evaluation in their entirety and pass the post- test with 80% or higher will receive an electronic certificate via email. RNs completing the activity will receive 2.0 contact hours of continuing education.
The Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

AWARDING OF CE
- Participants who achieve a minimum passing score of 80% will receive a certificate awarding 2.0 contact hours.
