The focus for this professional development activity is on Oncologic Emergencies seen in oncology patients in the ED as a side effect of treatment or opportunistic illness resulting from their immune compromised state. This CE is designed to provide oncology specialty and non-specialty nurses with current evidence-based practice knowledge and strategies for recognizing oncologic emergencies and how to implement appropriate nursing interventions to reduce the likelihood of complications and further distress in oncology patients.
Session objectives:
- Describe the following oncologic emergencies: superior vena cava syndrome, malignant pericardial effusions, spinal cord compression, hypercalcemia, TLS, SIADH, and febrile neutropenia.
- Describe signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment considerations of the oncologic emergencies listed in Objective 1.
- Identify key nursing interventions for the oncologic emergencies listed in Objective 1
Successful completion of learning activity:
Participants who view the recorded voice-over PowerPoint presentation in its entirety, complete the evaluation form, and pass the post-test with 80% or higher, will receive an electronic certificate via email. RNs completing the activity will receive a 1.0 contact hour of continuing education.
